MAFIA II ARTICLES FROM THE PRESS EVENT
Several weeks ago, we held Mafia II press events for journalists in several countries. Today, those journalists are starting to publish about what they saw. We'll be updating the list of articles as they go live, so check back for more reading material!
Eurogamer.net Mafia Retrospective
Eurogamer.net "The game's looking smart and characterful..."
Rockpapershotgun.com "Mafia II is authentic."
Gamezone.de "Mafia II looks brilliant even at that early stage."
Videogamer.com "Vito Scaletta, the gangster star of Mafia II, looks really cool when he saunters down the street.”
Gameswelt.de "It looks great, it looks damn great: Mafia II looks like Mafia: The City of Lodt Heaven, but hi-res!"
de.videogames.games.yahoo.com "Want it!"
Gamefox.de "2K Czech really catches the virtues of the predecessor."
Gamearena.com.au "[Mafia II] looks superb and absolutely nails the setting."
Gamekult.com "Moreover, the Xbox 360 version showed amazing graphics rarely seen nowadays, you will understand that Mafia II will be without any doubt one of the titles to keep an eye on by the end of the year"
Jeuxvideo.com "In brief, we simply want to play it. Among the list of the titles planned for 2009, Mafia II appears in a good standing. And this first look presentation won't tranquilize us..."
Jeuxactu.com "[This First Look is] a first opportunity to see how the 2K Czech's next-generation engine, the Illusion Engine (note the reference to their previous name, Illusion Softworks), wreaking havoc in terms of graphics.
Meristation.com "Mafia II is back keeping and respecting the features that made this game AAA in the past but bringing everything that needed to be enhanced in this genre."
Jeuxvideopc.com "This demo made my mouth water. The engine and the promising gameplay should give us finally a gangster game worthy of this name, with numerous subtleties and an incomparable ambience."
3DJuegos.com "Our first impressions couldn't be more positive."
Gamer.nl "We expect this to be one of the biggest hits this fall."
Gamez.nl "2K Czech delivered the first proof that Mafia II can be a more than worthy successor to the 2002 classic."
Insidegamer.nl "18 hours on the road for a 1.5 hour presentation. Few games can pull that off and still make you feel good."
Tweakers.net “What’s even more impressive, certainly for an open world game, is that there is no single loading screen.”
Gametrailers A three part gameplay video, originally aired on Spike TV.
IGN "If our brief demo of Mafia II is any indication, console gamers shouldn't be worried and fans of actions games should be excited. …whether you were a fan of the PC original or one of the many who played the epic fail console version, Mafia II is definitely worth keeping an eye on."
Kotaku "Overall, I'm optimistic about Mafia II based on what I saw. The span from 1944 to 1950-something may not be as exciting as mob life in the Prohibition era, but it's still a change of pace from the Grand Theft Auto and Godfather games."
Joystiq "Much like the first time we dropped into GTA IV's Liberty City, we were immediately floored by how "alive" it looked. If anything, though, Mafia II's world seems to have less populating it -- people, cars, etc. -- but what's there is already more convincing than what we'd seen in Rockstar's game…what we saw was enough to get us excited about another mob game, one where there's a strong narrative and very much a right and a wrong way to do thing."
Escapist "For a game that's so intent on producing some genuine fiction (to use the fancy word), 2K Czech needs to nail the atmosphere of the period, and from what I saw they've done a pretty fine job. From the "cinematic" soundtrack of 40s and 50s tunes (you can't customize the music), to the late afternoon glow of the city streets that made every block of Empire Bay look like an iconic snapshot of the classic New York City of our dreams, and especially in the deftly scripted and acted cutscenes, Mafia II's world and its inhabitants seem more alive than any sandbox city since Grand Theft Auto IV."
Loot Ninja "With so many games on the horizon for 2009, there still weren’t many titles that were really catching my eye. Well my friends, that has now changed. After Loot Ninja’s 1st eyes on during a recent 2K media day, it’s easy to see that Mafia II is without a doubt going to be on everyone’s shopping list come this fall."
VideoGameMedia "The storyline and character development looks intriguing, and I can’t wait to delve into the game myself to discover the epic story. Driving and shooting sequences from the original are back and look great."
Multiplayer.it "The first impact with Mafia II, images and videos, are enough and nobody can sit by: texture, shader, lighting effects, everything has been developed carefully and can be compared only to greatest productions."
Nextgame.it "Mafia is a masterpiece and to recognize in a sequel a familiar Mafia-style, it’s more than encouraging. Also because the team, now 2K Czech, is the same of the original game and for that a confirmation for millions of video gamers worldwide."
Gamesurf.it "Mafia left a permanent sign in the heart of many gamers developing a story worthy of the best gangster movies and promising a even exciting sequel."
Gameblog.fr "Immersive, graphically achieved, more realistic in comparison with Grand Theft Auto, and promising a diving within an epoch and a social environment rarely seen in a video game, Mafia II is looking good."
Gamer.no "There is no doubt that there has been great expectations for Mafia 2 ever since it was announced, and certainly what we have seen does its predecessor great justice. With a clearly defined style, direction, and realism prioritized not to mention a solid story and setting we are truly set for a stunning new adventure in Mafia style. There is still a long way to go before Mafia II hits shelves, but I have all faith that when we reach Fall 2009 we have one of this year's biggest game in our hands!."
